They're- ma works, pa works, everybody works and the kids come home from school and either get a bite and eat it or they pick up something on the way home and eat it and it's not per-- well supper time was supper time (laughs) when the kids here were coming home, you-know?

I-don't-know- and n-- nothing was ever planned like you-know? Somebody will say, "Well okay, let's have a potluck supper." Well next thing you knew you were having a potluck supper and you-know, just ah-

... just had a plain dinner. Potatoes, meat and veggies. And ah nothing fancy. A lot of these things in store now, I don't even know what they are. You-know that come from other countries. But um, and usually our main meal would be at noon hour and then at supper we would heat up whatever potatoes and veggies were left and sometimes if I had cooked a roast, we'd just have ah cold meat then.

But it was Kira's turn so I'd put the tail and the dish and I'd put it in the pantry. So then it's supper time, Kira said, "Well, I'm going in to get my tail." Wasn't there anymore. Aunt-Melissa had eaten it on her.

Speaker: And we used to sleigh right there every night. Interviewer: Really? On the road. Speaker: Oh yeah, oh yeah. Ah, once it comes supper time, this thing was pretty dead around here. So there'd be the odd horse on the road or a horse and cutter but we'd sleigh right on- right on the main road.

... my dad, he said, "You shoed him before and you had a lot of trouble with him." My dad said, "I remember him, yeah. He's a bad one." So he said to me, I was helping in the shop at the time, I said, "Well leave that lad 'til after supper. So just leave him standing there.

So we went down after supper, he said, "I'll get you to hold him by the head, he's alright on the front feet but his- when you go near the hind feet you just-" And they could fly, my God, he could kick me to that door. So I went up.

Speaker: Wednesday night is wing night. My son cooks it. He's a good cook; he cooks up so I go up for supper on Wednesday night and that's it. Hour up and an hour back. Couple of hours there. Dirty buggers, they always try to- want you to have a drink or two, you-know? And that's bad.

And ah, my dad said, "Oh and where are they living now?" "Oh they live out in the country, out on the Eighth-Line." And he's- "What's their name?" And I- "Well their last name is Moyles." Well, my dad laughed and he said, "You- you get your supper finished, I'll take you and show you where they live 'cause I been there so many times. His- one of- their dad and I used to go out to dances.

Speaker: I-don't-know, there were just so- great buddies. ... Yeah a lot of violin music in our day. Interviewer: Yeah. Speaker 2: We- we were at a dance down the street here, Monday night. Speaker: Supper at the legion? Speaker 2: Yeah. ... Monday night.

Speaker: One night he was heading home and Joseph called him, he say, "No, come in for supper." Speaker 2: He- he was- Speaker: Right out of his gate. Speaker 2: He was fencing with me.

Interviewer: You must get really hungry. Speaker: Oh yeah, you do, you g-- well the trouble is if you eat too much, then you can't bend over after supper to do the work, you-know?

And ah, we were at their place for supper the other night and ah, this really large bear and he of-- often comes out into the field below their house in the spring ...

Interviewer: Do you ever do ah foraging for other stuff like wild leeks or ferns (inc)- Speaker: Yeah actually I had leeks last night for supper. Interviewer: Oh did you?

So then the guy- the tall guy says to us, "You better come to the house. Supper's on." Wife's been cooking supper for us so we better take that on too. Not everywhere we get to snack to eat but we- we get offered, we take it.

Supper wasn't quite ready. So we goes a way down this hill.

So while we were sitting, eating supper big big table, all you could eat, lots to eat and the whole nine yard, treated you royally that way. So while we were sitting here eating supper, we looked up above, this big table, there was the biggest chandelier you ever seen. So you wondered well if there's no power here to pump water, what's this thing up here (laughs)?

So we phoned all the neighbours and everybody donated a dish of something. It didn't matter if it was a casserole ah fresh bread or-what. And that's what we did. We put on a supper that that whole family could be together rather than-

Speaker 2: But we always did have chores that had to be done. Speaker: Like the dishes. (laughs) Interviewer: Yeah. (laughs) Speaker 2: Yes, the dishes. (laughs) Interviewer: Yeah, that's a lot. Speaker: But all we had was the supper dishes. Mom always kept the other dishes all done up. Like, there'd just be the supper dishes.

My father worked out at Donrobin-farm. And ah he would give my mother two dollars a week for groceries which was nothing. And ah one night she asked him to stay for supper, he'd say, "(Sigh) I'm going out to the farm, I get better food out there." He was not a nice man from what I understand but I- that's all I know of him.
