... that's a big business there and they stop you on the street and offer you a sweater or offer you a bottle of whiskey or offer you anything if you'll come to their party and a free supper, all-you-can-eat. And then they give the speech after of- of ah these apartments and how nice they are, and-

Speaker: So he thought he'd stop by, stay overnight so he could take his son out for supper. And it's just funny how like somebody who hasn't been here in a year- Interviewer: Yeah. Speaker: He recognizes me and I thought "Okay this man looks familiar." But it's 'cause he looks like his son.

And I-don't-know what it is a muskrat or-whatever at the back there I've seen a few times but he comes down the hill and by the shed and- think he's having supper in the shed (laughs).

Interviewer: Pig on a leash? (Laughs) Speaker: Well yeah because they took it for a walk. The kids thought it was a pet. They didn't realize it was going to become supper someday.

Interviewer: Well, you have to have some time as family time. Speaker: Yeah. You-know got to check in with the young lad there and make sure, you-know, how's school going and- 'cause we bypass each other, we only have supper together every night as a family. Whether, you-know, like whether we see each other at any other time, we have supper at the table every night together.

Well with my shifts I can 'cause I'll go home, sleep. I'll take something out for supper when I go home. Sleep. My son will get me up at three-thirty and I'll cook supper and we have supper together so.

And my son will each anything. Like just about anything that you could make, he will try. So it's sometimes two or three meals, like for supper, two or three different things like if my son wants Chinese food I have to make my husband burgers and fries or a steak or-something, you-know, 'cause my husband doesn't eat that.

... as far as planning something goes like, you-know, you guys showed up just a little bit after eleven, it was like perfect, because like as far as making a plan go as like, we've got variables that pop up within every five minutes, therefore like- planning suppers and whatnot.

Bertha, this woman that passed away, I spoke to her on the phone looking for Lisa. I would phone down there because Lisa was down there so much. Um, they were friends and she'd go and help her with cleaning and-stuff and visit and have supper with them and sort-of like just spent time.

Soon as school was out, you'd been on the rink until it was supper time and then you'd go home and eat supper and then you'd come back and play until nine-o-clock or whenever they'd turn the lights off-

Speaker: These pins were all laced in the carpet- Interviewer: (Laughs) Speaker: And- and we'd go to grandma's for supper and after supper it was like, "Oh you kids go play in the basement." It was like, "No don't send us down to the basem--" 'cause you know you're going to get your feet skewered with these pins, so-

Like we were free to roam. Um, I-mean from the time you were five or six years old, y-- you were literally kicked out of the house on- on a Saturday morning and as long as your home for supper, ah, they didn't care where you were, they didn't ask, they didn't know and- and ah, I-mean we weren't out robbing banks or-anything, we just-

Speaker: (inc) ah- Christmas supper sometimes, Christmas (inc) day after Christmas. Interviewer: Mm-hm. Speaker: It all depends though on what goes on. Yeah- Interviewer: There must be so much food (laughs). Speaker: Lots of food (laughs).

Ah, yeah, it was nice, it was very nice. It was worse when like- 'cause my mother worked, so then we always had to start the suppers and- and get ready ourselves in the morning.

Speaker: My mother was a personal support worker so she was shift work, eh? Interviewer: Mm. Speaker: Yeah, so she worked evenings, we'd make supper and if she was gone in the day, we'd do breakfast, but yeah.

Speaker: Our synagogue was very active. Interviewer: Oh okay. Speaker: Um we had potluck suppers and we had all the Jewish holidays and we had weddings and we had um ah boys turning thirteen and for well- which is a simcha.

I remember taking like the yellow school bus down and it was like the most uncomfortable thing in the world. Ah, we went to- it wasn't that fun. It wasn't like the trips nowadays. It was like the ROM-museum and the only fun part was probably going for supper the one night, ah- ah I think it was Eastside-Marios and then across the street we went to see ah, the Phantom-of-the-Opera.

Ah, the Ukranian-church, they had a hall. Ah, yeah. And there was numerous halls around- mine halls and-that. Ah there was activities going on quite often. Dances and you-know get-togethers and suppers and-things-like-that. This is the ah, this is sixty-fifth-street, this is a senior- senior living place here. There's the old T-P-R back up there.

Speaker: You-know, we play games, watch movies. We go shopping together, make- Interviewer: Yeah. Speaker: Supper together, like it's a- it's a very social thing for me as well. Um, so that parts- I- I like that and so by doing those things, like I'm off now for the summer and I'll probably work on my courses for the summer ...

Well Dad, he laid into me when I got- when I went in the door. "Up- get to your bedroom, no supper!" And he nailed me with the strap across the butt. ... Ah I was up in my room, no supper. (makes crying noise) Five minutes later, Mother comes up with a big tray of food for me.
