She would take the horse and buggy in the earlier years, or the horse and cutter in winter but then when we got a car, she would take the car.

Interviewer: Mm-hm. In the winter what would you use in place of a buggy? Speaker: A cutter. And then a sleigh.

The horse and- a horse, around. And ah ah both summer and winter, buggies and s-- cutters, yeah.

And when the horse and cutters- it's all horse and cutters in those days. They come right through this archway and they come down into the hotel and the- steps, you-see and it wasn't outside at all when you got into the cutter. And that's still there.

Oh w-- there was ah- oh when we were kids, we used to take the horse and cutter and go way up in the bush some- out- Interviewer: Yeah. Speaker: The side roads.

So- and I remember I had to um- like usually the girl was there, but for some reason she wasn't there one wintery and I had to walk home by myself in the snow and it was snowing quite hard. This man came along came with horse and cutter and said um, "I'm going to give you a road- a ride home" and of course I've been well taught by my parents, you did not talk to strangers, you never rode with str-- strangers or-anything. So I said, "No, I can't." He said, "Oh it's too stormy, you'll get lost in the storm" and I said, "No I have to walk." So he said ah, "Oh that's a shame, I know both your parents well and they wouldn't mind." I said, "Yes, that's not what they tell me." So at-last he persuaded me that I didn't have to get in the cutter, but I could stand on the runners, you-know, of the cutter-

And my (inc) made me a little um doll cutter to- that I could push my doll in the snow and it- it was gray.

One thing I remember was ah in the winter going in- it was at night and we were going, I-guess, from our grandparents place to our aunts place and ah it was in a what they called a cutter (laughs).

I can remember when it's very cold it was below zero and the sound of the cutter on the snow was- I still remember that (laughs).

Oh yes we had a garden and we had few chickens and ah and the one horse and it was either a cutter or um- or ah l-- like a little um carriage and ah yeah and that's ah really about all we had.

Yeah. We walked to school every day all year 'round except on the real bad days in the winter my dad used to hook up a horse and cutter and give us a ride to school. And I remember he used to get mad when the- he was leaving the school to bring us home and the kids used to run behind and jump on the back of the cutter. He'd get mad as hell. And ah- Interviewer: What would he do? Speaker: Well just yell at them. Interviewer: (Laughs) Speaker: To get off the- the cutter because they might get their feet caught. The- the cutter had ah, supports to support the runners. And you get your foot in there, you get caught between the snow- an-- an-- the snow- deep snow on the- on the ah, support, the rudders. Or the runners rather. And break their feet.

And then you-know it used to be- the doctors used to come out with- on a- on a horse- with a horse and cutter (laughs).

But he'd come- in the wintertime we lived way back above Clayton. Come with a horse and cutter. And s-- and wait 'til baby was born.

Speaker: It was a family affair (laughs). Interviewer: (inc) tell you a story about a horse and cutter. The- the neighbours that lived beside me when I was growing up, there was one daughter in the family.

So there'd be the odd horse on the road or a horse and cutter but we'd sleigh right on- right on the main road.

And she used to take the horse-and-cutter down.

And that's wagon. It's up in the shed and that cutter is up there. Interviewer: That cutter is beautiful.

'Cause I remember going to church with a horse and cutter and the buffalo were all going to- heated brick at our feet.

And they lived way out in the middle of the country too, so she had to, when she finished her high-schooling, she had a horse and a cutter to take her into Ottawa to go to s-- Interviewer: To Teacher's-College. Speaker: T-- t-- to Teacher's-College.

But the- the woman that owns the house on- in a cutter, and horse and cutter.
