Interviewer: Are there any interesting War stories that your father ever told you (inc)? Speaker: He- he did talk- well, Dad ah essentially became the ah the local ah Legion historian ah um starting in nineteen-eighty-five. Um so he had lots of things that- lots of stuff that he actually researched.

Speaker: Ah s-- but i-- there was a close network of friends. Used to play road-f-- road-hockey out front of the house here. Steady. Um used to play baseball at ah at Golden-Avenue, used to play ah football at the Legion-Park- ah or the ah Legion-Park just outside there. Interviewer: Right. Speaker: We'd play ah cricket in the spring here- there were a steady stream of little sports-type activities, I think would be one thing I remember.

But um I'm- I'm sure I'm forgetting sh-- ah basically down to kind-of like curling and acting, I think, is what I'm kind-of down to. And of-course the other- other h-- ah hobby if- is- is um Dad was involved with the Legion. Um and I kind-of inherited his role. A little reluctantly, but- but I've inherited his role as the- not as the historian, 'cause I'm not an historian. What I really is-- inherited is- is keeping up a memorial board to the people that have fallen.

Um from the- from the- that- that belonged to the- to the (inc) Legion. So I've been doing that, um and I've also helped out in Remembrance-Day ceremonies, 'cause I- I- I- I chaired the last one, or basically moderated, so. I ah that- that's- that's a hobby.

And was blown away by it and I'm like, "One of these days, I'm going to do that- that play." It was about five women during- during World-War-Two in Canada and so I came in- in- two-thousand I think it was, the legion approached me and said, "Would you be willing to direct a play?" and I'm like, "I have just the play!"

And then have supper where everybody takes something and then- then that's something I go to. And then ah- oh but not the legion but I'm an ah life member now so I- and they have big stairs, eh?

Ah, no. I work at the Legion, right now. ... But I w-- my mom worked at the Franklin-Tavern for fourteen years. I was there for almost ten. ... My whole family worked at the Franklin, actually.

Interviewer: Okay, so where did you say you work now as a bartender? Speaker: At the Legion. ...I don't mind it. I don't know many jobs where I can sit and get paid. ... For- for most of the day. Like I think out of a- what six-and-a-half-hour shift?

Um, I've played on a few different teams. Ah, most of the girls that I started out with aren't playing anymore. ... Ah, I'm on a really good team right now. Actually, we're sponsored by the legion and we've won five out of six years.

Interviewer: Aw, that's okay. What is it that you're trying to think of? Speaker: His platoon that he was in. ... It's at the Legion, I can see it on the wall, but I can't come up with the name (laughs).

But you-know what was interesting? Years later. This is sort-of interesting. Years later my dad told me that the team I- I'd played for- Legion was the organization I'd played for. And my dad told me that they were interested in taking me to play Junior-A when I was much younger.

And ah there was a regiment that came out of Kirkland-Lake, if I remember correctly. Algonquins. And ah the legion was a big thing. The legion started sh-- shortly thereafter, and- Interviewer: Okay. Yes, I've heard of it. Speaker: Almost all the men and- and women who served- ah joined. ... legions nowadays are having a tough time, because, you-know, the old-timers have all died off ...

But you know I- I can thank the good lord (inc) pop cans alone. I buy them from the schools and from the legion and little old ladies up- keeps them, little kids that gathering them up and believe me I don't make no money in these pop cans but it puts a lot of food on the table for certain people. It helps school children go on a trip.

(Phone rings) And that's what it's all about. Today, people aren't like that. They wouldn't care about that but I still do. And- and out of a-- I wouldn't have made my trucking on it but I made some people happy.

I'm going to make money on it. And I'm going to make money off bigger people. But on- not off school kids or- or school, or legion or children that (inc) (phone rings) and older people. Like I don't know what you want to hear in this interview but-

The Hargrave was- w-- was the third mine from- this is the Tolburn, the Silver-night and then the Hargrave, eh? It was one of the bigger one. It was the Silver-night and the- you know when you go ah, to the legion- ... Well that's the Hargrave property. The legion and where the- the diamond drilling place is- ... And you know where the bingo hall is? ... That- that was the f-- the recreation ah, building for the Hargrace-Mine, eh?

Interviewer: Oh, tell me about those. What's a fifty-fifty draw? Speaker: Well we have one fifty-fifty is ah, fift-- f-- f-- half of the money I pick up goes to the legion and another goes to the person. And then we have a draw for the bus driver.

Interviewer: Was there anything that you remember being here in Porcupine when you were growing up younger that it- isn't here anymore or- ? I-- i-- a major change maybe? Speaker: Well just the legionnaires. Like ah the people at the legion used to kind-of ah have a big parade, ah more than once a year actually. They were practicing their bagpipes or other activities and they don't ah do that too often. There's not much going on, not even for members eh?

So you go to their- they have a presentation every year and you go and they have a flower show and then show the winners of the roses, and the best ah, you-know, vegetables and that's ah you get out to see that. And then our Legion is- I said, our Legion's busy. ... Like it's still carrying on after all these years.

Well, have to go and rent a bus for the Legion and they take it to him. Four times a year, I only go (fumbling).
